Domestic J in the US is always labeled as first class, it's just the way it is. Not just AA, but all the airlines do it. Including airlines like DL or AS which don't have proper international first class cabins. No one here sees it and assumes it'll be a lay flat with dom

It's essentially what the rest of the world calls business class (and what the US airlines call business class on international shorthaul too). All very confusing I know.
Some of us think that just serving a meal and blocking a middle seat isn't enough to call it J either! I'd rather have the big recliner and no meal.
