I wouldn't count on getting points for banquet facilities/catering costs.....however, if you can somehow convince the local guest service manager that this reception is a "meeting", you may be able to receive this benefit. There is a limit on both miles and points, if given.

In addition, if you pay for the event with your MR VISA, you should receive an additional 3 points/dollar.

Something to consider, if you have substantial points in your MR account, is that, under the most advantageous terms above, you may be better off electing to receive points vs miles, as, with a travel package purchase, you will receive one mile per point, beyond the minimum package.
