The AMEX plat requires a confirmed seat, so as long as your BP has a seat assignment you will get. Yes they have problems with revenue passengers without a seat assignment.
There are many reasons why someone might not have a seat assignment:
- Their flight was cancelled and they're on stand-by for the next one.
- Missed their original flight, standing by for next one.
- Upgrade was confirmed but it's under airport control and there's no seat assignment
- Arrived early at airport, chose to standby for earlier flight
- etc.
If I show up at a lounge and they try to deny admission due to lack of a seat assignment, they're gonna have a big problem.
