1) Alaska emailed me with a special offer at the moment to get 30k bonus miles plus a companion fare if I get the credit card and spend $1000 within 90 days. I cannot tell whether or not this is an additional companion fare on top of the one yearly one that seems to come with the card. If it's not an additional companion fare, does this mean I will not get it any year if I don't spend the $1000?
2) Ideally, I would like to spend $1000+ on airfare for one person and then use the companion pass for another person. I am assuming this doesn't count towards the initial $1000 if I try to use the companion fare at the same time?
Thanks
1) You will get one companion code deposited into your AS account after you have met the initial $1,000 spend. Every year after that, as long as you keep the card, you will get one new companion code every year on your anniversary date. There are no further spend requirements after the initial $1,000.
2) You will not receive the companion code in your account until after you make the initial $1,000 spend. To use the companion code, you must book both travelers at the same time using the code (which you will only get
after you have met the $1,000 spend). You cannot use it retroactively. So yes, you can spend $1,000 on airfare and that will count as your initial spend, but you won’t have been able to also use the companion code for that booking as you won’t actually have it until after you meet the spend. Kind of like the chicken-egg scenario. You don’t get the code in your account until after you have met the spend. If you want to use the companion code for that booking, then you have to spend $1,000 on something else first, wait for the code to hit your account, then book your tickets for you and your companion.
