Your analogy IMO doesn't work: Mozzarella designates a specific type of cheese whereas helicopter/robot are English nouns. Pronouncing appellations, protected geographic indications and similar product names in a more or less authentic manner makes it somewhat easier for everyone as those words translate more easily. Take for instance champagne. In most languages, you'd probably be fine when ordering the 'Champagne'. You wouldn't get far with 'sparkling wine'.

That doesn't mean that you have to put on a fake Italian accent ...

This is an interesting thread. I wouldn't worry too much about pronunciation. As long as the F/A understands what you want, everything's fine.

OT: Has anyone figured out how to pronounce the name of that Icelandic volcano?
