A Trip to the Yucatan -- Hacienda San Jose [Master Thread]

Introduction Hacienda San JoseStayed April 2018 Why Here? My wife got to pick our spring break vacation destination, and when she selected the Yucatan I remembered Starwood had some properties there (http://www.thehaciendas.com/#home). We originally were looking for 4 nights, and both Hacienda San Jose and Hacienda Temozon looked appealing -- the grounds looked beautiful, and their distance from the Mayan ruins we wanted to visit was reasonable. We used points for the trip, and in the end San Jose coming in at 12,000 per night vs the 16,000 from Temozon was the deciding factor. And since we were using points we decided to stay an extra night since it was free at that point. Pre-Trip Planning We wanted to spend half the time seeing parts of the area and half the time relaxing at the hacienda. We decided against a rental car, and booked two days of touring with Lawsons. They were very responsive to all our emailed questions, and put together an itinerary we were very happy with. They offered to handle the airport transfers too, but we declined over cost. In the end we had a great time with the tour, and highly recommend them. The haciendas staff was also very responsive to any email questions. They offered to arrange airport transfers with an outside company, for less than Lawsons. That worked out well -- we were met right outside the terminal at Merida, and were quickly on our way. And we similarly were met at the hacienda on time when returning to the airport. The staff also responded quickly when asked about kids meals. I mentioned we were celebrating a birthday, and they said they'd surprise us with something. Room We arrived a little after 7PM, and were graciously welcomed. I speak very limited Spanish, but understood the parts about "upgrade" (gracias!) and "breakfast or points"?" (desayuno!). We originally booked a superior room, and were upgraded to a junior suite garden view. It felt spacious, and presumably due to the birthday there were balloons on the beds and petals strewn about -- nice! There also was a plate of sweets. They vaguely resembled a sugarplum, though were extremely tart.Within the room was a hammock -- what a fun thing to have! Our daughter loved it.The outside of the room had a hammock too.It was hot when we were there, with highs in the low 90s. The room ostensibly had air conditioning, but it never really got *cold*. It was never uncomfortable, and we slept fine, but those who want a cold room take note. The plunge pool was an undrained deep outdoor tub. Though the space was shielded on all sides by vegetation, the tub looked a bit dirty when we checked it out. The staff offered to clean and fill whenever we wanted, but the initial impression wasn't very inviting and we never took advantage of it. The Grounds The place is gorgeous.
