Telling gate agent that I'm not taking a flight: protection from cancellation of trip

I have a 2-segment flight today. I'm trying to go standby on 2 earlier flights. The second standby segment looks like it'll be tough to make, and so if I don't clear going standby, I'd rather just drive the second segment. I have another 2 segments on the return trip tomorrow, and I don't want them to be cancelled.

On US Airways if I wanted to drive instead of taking this short second segment, I could tell a gate agent that I wouldn't be traveling, and my second segment would be de-activated (unsure exactly how), and the rest of my trip would be fine; it wouldn't be cancelled.

Will this work on American? If I don't clear the standby list, can I just tell a gate agent or Admirals Club agent that I won't be taking the second segment today, and so my return trip wouldn't be cancelled?

Thanks.
