I had never seen that before and though that was actually a pretty good idea.
I've see this on a regular basis, at least whenever someone is still nursing their drink. Occasionally -- perhaps a half-dozen times a year -- the flight attendant doesn't care and lets you keep the coffee mug or the glass. This helps me bring a souvenir home. Almost all my silverware and coffee mugs are from airlines. In particular, Air France's silverware is very elegant. KLM's coffee mugs are too small.
