I think it was fine. Obviously exercise caution as you would in any major city to avoid sketchy areas, and avoid protests. As a foreigner in a developing nation, you will stick out and attract more attention than a local, which is unlike NY/DC, but not unlike other foreign cities. Also, now with Uber, it's really easy to get around without worrying about taxi scams.
