For phone, it's pretty simple. I get a burner phone, encrypt it, and do a hard wipe before I land. Burner phones are cheap at $50 too, I have many.
But what about laptops? How do you guys deal with sanitizing your laptop before re-entering the country? There's too much junk for me to reinstall from a clean format. I suppose I could find a spare laptop, but that's not optimal because I do a lot of work that requires customized settings that are not easy to replicate.

As anyone experimented with those encryption software that allows you to boot into a "phantom OS" (it's basically a clean install OS with no customization), and you basically give that "fake" password to the aggressor to make them happy. If not under duress, you would another password that boots in your real OS with all your software and settings.
