I don't want to make you feel bad, but I'm not sure that was necessary. Funnily enough I spoke to a friend today who was in a similar situation. He is Singaporean and goes by three names Cat Dog Lion. When he's outside of Asia (and sometimes within) no one is really sure what to call him once they look at his business card. He's heard everything from Cat, Mr Cat, Cat Lion, Mr Lion, etc. People assume Dog is his middle name...He goes informally by Lion.

Anyway, he flew QF last week on a ticket that was completely mangled, coming out as Dog Cat Lion Dog Mr. He described with great hilarity the scene at the gate in SYD, but it really was no issue and he was sent on his way onto the airplane.

The point is that names are so complicated and with no agreed upon transliteration, airlines typically use other elements of data (ie birthdate) to verify identity.
