And to answer your question. No, it's not the norm for United. Most of the time you don't have to ask for it, it seems like in this case if you want it (and I assume you do because you're posting on here, then just ask for it...)

And to get this straight, you stopped flying United because they have broken equipment? Or because they don't give you $$$ when you want it. Cause it seems like the latter, when I would think it should be the former.
