Since we are on pronouncing place names, here in Nebraska we are a funny lot. I live in Kearney, and it is pronounced Car-nee. Now some other place names that are purely Nebraskan in pronouncing.
Norfolk (Nor-fork, as on the north fork of the Elkhorn River)
Madrid (Mad-rid)
Cairo (Care-o)
Beatrice (Be-AT-riss)
As for southeast Colorado where is spent a few months for work, the Arkansas river is pronounced ar-kansas, not arkansaw. Baca County is BACK-a county. Just a few examples from my neck of the woods.
