Maybe you could ask if they could "try the old system"? I'm just grasping at straws, really.
The only other thing I can think of is that I've seen a few reports of LH awards being involved in UA married segments. I'd try searching a few points-beyond (e.g, if you're trying to book FRA-IAH, try searching for FRA-AUS, FRA-SAT, and FRA-DFW). Maybe that'll be able to get the flight to appear, and then you could try calling to drop the last segment.
It's really disheartening to accumulate these miles, understand the systems and the rules, and then be thwarted when trying to do something that is clearly supposed to be allowed.
