Delays due to weather, or apparently closed runways at PHX are "outside AA control" and therefore if you want meals/lodging for your 12+ hours that you're stuck at the airport you have to foot the bill yourself.

Want another airline? They'll refuse to interline you and you'll have to pay the ticket out of your own pocket.
I never said that they would pay for your hotel room or meals. During IRROPS, US airlines typically don't (unlike those in Europe). That's what travel insurance is for. As I did say, you'll be reaccommodated on the next available flight. In fact, AA is one of the few airlines that will protect across separate tickets.
