Airlines are only exempt from denied boarding compensation in three well-defined cases: Lack of documentation for travel, if the passenger poses a health risk or if the passenger poses a security risk. BA tried to pull the same thing on me several years ago when they denied me and others boarding because we'd miss our connecting flight in LHR. They ended up paying once I opened a small claims procedure in court.
