My partner and I both have QF business class award bookings (using AS miles) from SYD to the US in December. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find two seats available on a single flight so we are currently booked on two different flights departing on the same day; one direct from SYD and the other with a SYD-MEL connection. I've been checking award availability for both these flights in the hopes that another seat opens up on one of them. If that happens I can just change one reservation to match the other but after watching QF award availability a bit now it seems like the chances of this happening are low.

I'm curious what chances we have of getting one itinerary to match the other if there are seats available close-in to departure. Since it's an award fare from a partner (AS) I'd imagine this adds extra complications. Would the agents at SYD be willing to move me from my later connecting flight to my partner's earlier departing direct if there's an open seat?
