I don't agree with UA selling flights with tight connections, but it is what it is. I booked 3 trips today, and some of the offerings included 32-40 minute connections. Given actual time to deplane, run to a gate, etc, I wouldn't do it, but they sell it.
Many years ago we had an international -> domestic connection the travel agent booked with something like 90 minutes. This was back when I wasn't as travel-wise, I wasn't proactive about it and only squawked when I saw the tickets. Took a lot of screeching to get them to redo it on a safer connection.
Actually flying we made good time through immigration/customs and managed to walk past the offending flight, still boarding. We would have made the flight but our bags would not--at recheck we were 10 minutes after the cutoff for that flight.
The problem isn't a new one, although it might have gotten worse.
