i'm in a similar position to the original poster as i'd like to transfer my points to my wife's account. i completely understand that there is a cost to do this that make it usually not worthwhile, and i also get that for most cases, this doesn't matter as one can book tickets for others.

however, the reason i'd like to do this is because my wife and kid will be on a flight without me, and wife currently holds a companion pass.
so unless she's the one who's actually purchasing the ticket, she won't be able to use her companion pass. or, and this is really my question, is that not true?

ie can i buy the ticket for her and then she can add my kid via the companion pass?
