The GS advantage is certainly huge - especially when you can also upgrade award tickets with upgrade instruments. But it's all route dependent; some routes (e.g. SFO-MSP) reliably have R space open up 7-21 days out on many of the flights, whereas others (e.g. SFO-WAS peak days) I'm happy to find a reasonably-timed nonstop with A space (and Z space is tricky).
