If you want seats guaranteed together, pay for them. Otherwise play the seat lottery.

2 How do I put in my global entry know traveler # for faster checkin/security? The guy I talked to had *no* idea what I was talking about (I even used the terms Nexus/Sentri which I believe is what it's called outside the US)

You don't.
You still get GE benefits (kiosk and all on the return) but no precheck as the airline does not participate in precheck.
