The same thing happened a couple of months ago when I was flying on Swiss JFK-ZRH. My son forgot to put his phone in airplane mode (overnight flight) and when he woke up in the AM as we were approaching ZRH, went to turn his data off and saw messages from AT&T that roaming charges were over $100. It took my wife several calls to AT&T before they reversed the charges.
