I've done this with my wife on multiple occasions, just tell the FAs and most will appreciate what a good guy you are for doing so and maybe give you a free drink or whatever that would not normally go the the non-EXP assigned to that seat.
Not for an SWU. They can be assigned to anyone on the PNR. Now if it was a complementary upgrade, then yes, the EXP should be the one assigned the seat. But as stated before, you can give up that seat to your SO and take their seat (but no switching back and forth during the flight). In fact, you can give up your seat to ANYONE if you choose, just let the FAs know what you are doing. I see/hear of many that will offer up their F seat to military.
