Having read through umpteen pages of this thread, I must commend you on your insight to what is the single most probable reason that existing MR-LTP are to get a 'grandfathered' LT-PPE . I never saw this as an intended/unintended slight to SPG-LTPs at all. For SPG LTG's/LTP's the new MR program maintains a distinction post MR/SPG program merge

Neither do the MR FT threads indicate that current MR-LTPs get better or more frequent upgrades over plain MR-Platinums. Much more likely the better upgrade goes to the 'active' Platinum with more ongoing current stays, and that at checkin reception just sees one is Plat, and not the extra hidden screen detail.
Maybe going forward something needs to change as from Aug2018 existing MR-Golds/Plats/LT's and SPG-50night-Plats will all look the same to checkin agents screen, ie MR-Platinum, which is not great(fair) for current 75night MR-Platinums regards still getting best upgrades over guests staying 50nights/year

Also regards SPG-Gold come Aug2018, SPGers need remember that they were never "matched" to MR-Gold, MR phrased that as an "Account LINK" so that ones status in MR or SPG was reflected in the other if zero status or lower. Thus come Aug2018 SPG-Gold will be "Re-Linked" to the less valuable "New MR-Gold" and not the "New 50night Plat". That view is confirmed as SPG-LTG equates to MR-New-LTG
