Sometimes you can. But this would not be a loophole, and more like active cheating. Retention deals have 2 parts: AF and its offset. If I accepted a retention deal and had to back out the same month, I'd at least offer to return the offset.
I'm in a similar situation. I called about the SPG card and got the 7000 pts / $1000 offer which I took. My AF posts next month. However, the rep told me that there would not be changes to my card earnings, which is not true in light of today's events. Surely that would be a valid reason to still close the card even if the SPG retention points posted?
