Back in the 80s I suppose. We have never left our passport with an inn or any type of lodging. Innkeepers have asked to see the passport but that's it.

And what did you buy? I've shown my passport and boarding pass at AMS to make purchases but that's it. I kept it in my hands and no one asked to write down any info from it.
