No airline will cover you for loss of income. Not even travel insurance will usually cover you for that; if it does, it is pretty good travel insurance.
The Montreal Convention - Article 19 does however state

Nevertheless, the carrier shall not be liable for damage occasioned by delay if it proves that it and its servants and agents took all measures that could reasonably be required to avoid the damage or that it was impossible for it or them to take such measures.
so does seem that Qantas could be on the hook for damages under the convention - though I doubt that it will give in too quickly ; might be worth lodging throuhg MCOL if it declines to pay
As far as additional expenses - Qantas is liable for those and I doubt that there will be much issue getting them reimbursed
