The part that particularly puzzles me is that a lot of these people are of the age group that I would have thought would know far more about that type of thing. It's almost bad enough to make me not use it just so I don't have to go through the reaction from another clueless clerk.
I live in the Bay Area and use Android pay wherever contactless is enabled (which, ironically, is far fewer places percentage-wise than in Germany) and no one looks askance or surprised. Perhaps people here are generally more techie than in the "major college town" in question.
