If one really can't sit in a window or middle, one can pay more for E+ or first or to change to a different flight. If one doesn't want to pay more, just sit down and don't bother any strangers.
I pay for F/J out of my pocket and always in advance I get an aisle.
I had one IRROPs where SIN-NRT-SFO-JFK had the last leg cancel as I landed in NRT. The UC agent got me the last J seat on NRT-EWR which was a window. The guy next to me didn’t mind the switch and legit slept the whole flight.
