I've had pat downs in Asian airports and one African airport and one Indian tourist site.

They were all actually pat downs.

No groping, gripping, rubbing, chopping or messing up my clothing. Always respectful. No running hands up and down bare legs or under clothing.

Had a layover in TPE a while ago. Men were going through without emptying their pockets. It was easier and faster to go through, stand on the painted circle and get their wanding/pat down than it was to empty and reload their pockets.
