Still seeing this at MEX for DL flights on a random basis. Actually, they would have up to three teams waiting when boarding DL flights a few years ago. And it wasn't really "random," they were just grabbing the first three passengers when F was called for boarding.

It it was an excellent cure for gate lice -- many would hang back until a few novices went through the door!
