Using a marriott visa you can earn 3 points (on marriott rewards) for every dollar spent at a marriott. However, these points do not transfer to united on a 1:1 basis. Please do a search, or scroll down, in the marriott forum for airline miles, there was a thread in the last 5 days on the same question but for AA miles (answers are the same).
