What I have seen is that most all Asian gateways have gate checks on the US bound flights that are near random. Occasionally a full blown search. Sometimes nothing. Often a quick question.

Of course they will get you at main/transit security, so presumably you plan to buy overpriced water in the departure lounge.

Most airlines are getting a lot better about providing water.
