On short haul the cleaners have 7 minutes on a turnaround, and if it's running late, even less. The cleaning crew is tracked via a handheld device, and have to update their system if there are delays in disembarking passengers, waiting for wheelchair assistance etc to reallocate their next job. Now I know it's unlikely, but if you are ever sat at the back, you'll see all the cleaners (all makes it sound like a huge team, but there's generally only 4 of them) huddle in the back galley waiting for you to get off. I'm guessing that Lufthansa are willing to pay for a larger number of cleaners so each person has less to clean, and can therefore put more effort in. Really with the levels we have on short haul, there's neither the time or resources to do more than pick up larger pieces of rubbish, cross the seat belts, give the loos and galleys a quick once over, empty the bins and reconfigure the Club cabin. Very often we'll even forgo a vacuum to get boarding underway as everyone is fixated on closing the door 5 minutes before departure to avoid having a delay allocated to them. The argument that they can get deep cleaned overnight is reliant on the powers that be putting the money into having enough cleaning crews to do a thorough job. As it is, it's the same small teams who have a few extra minutes to do a slightly more thorough job. So keep making good use of the Club hot towels!!
