You could ask to be routed through ATL, but that would be really out of your way. If your goal is a widebody and MQM's, it would do the trick. I don't know if they would book it for you or not.

If widebody is your major concern, there are wide-body flights from LAX and SLC at various times, so check which flights offer that and ask to be booked on them. Note that you may have to overnight in SLC or LAX to make the connection if it is an early morning departure, but they may honor that request if you are willing to pay for your own hotel.
