What I'm pretty sure OP is referring to is that on the latest [Android] version of the American Airlines app, you can scan you passport instead of manually filling out all of the information to check in for your flight.

I am planning to try this out in less than a month, but that's no use right now. I may report back for future people.

I'd assume the "normal" benefits of checking in early would apply.
