I'm afraid the conclusion from this thread is simply YMMV. For my part, I've never had any comments on my baggage weight even when I was checking a ludicrous amount of stuff and nobody has ever weighed my carry-on in dozens of flights. That said, I usually keep my carry-on pretty light for the simple reason that I personally prefer checking bags instead of schlepping them through the airport.
