Your other option is to use a CARES harness for your child. I have personally used them on Emirates flights many times with my grandchildren from age 18 months - much less bulky than carrying a car seat on board (you can always check the seat in if you need it at your destination). Just don't do what my daughter did on one occasion and leave the harness on the seat when you leave the aircraft as you will never see it again! She had to go and purchase another and I have a feeling that the one she left is languishing in a locker somewhere on Emirates metal!
I got a CARES harness and it is a useful tool. Was your grandchild able to sleep being strapped in it? Since my kid is not used to it and it doesn't have a crotch support, I feel like he is going to slip out of it while sleeping and if there is a seat belt sign on during turbulence, I will have to wake him up just to adjust the straps. How did you manage?
