I book J about 4 - 3 months out and then upgrade to F last minute. Our JNB-HKG segment had 3+ J seats, I booked 2 in late november for mid February. J seats remained available right up to the day of departure. Upgraded 1 to F for HKG-BOS segment at T-11 days. Also booked YVR-HKG-DPS in J three months out, no option for F on the route.

Yup, seems like J is plentiful but F is a rarity these days. Fortunately, CX's J product is quite decent and I especially love reverse herringbone seats. However, one thing to keep in mind is that booking 3-4 months out for peak travel periods (ex. late December) is not advisable. I was looking at flights last year in December for travel this December and there was at least 4 J seats available per flight. Now that I checked in early April and literally all these seats are gone so scoop them up quick if you decide to fly during this time! On the other hand, off-peak times, I wouldn't worry.
