I’ve booked close to two dozen Cathay first class awards long haul and intra-asia, and the availability always seem to come 1 to 2 weeks before departure date and sometimes 24 to 48 hours before departure. Many times it was 12 hours before departure. It’s common will get lucky with Premium cabins open 6 to 9 months before departure. Otherwise the rules above stand. So do not expect there to be open seats in first and business class a month or two out. You need to wait.

I realize that many of you don’t have the luxury of waiting around like that and leaving on a moments notice. Unfortunately that is the name of the game here.
Totally disagree!

For J seats it is possible to find availability for multiple seats about 4 to 3 months out. That would be better for people who can't fly last minute. F availability is easier to find very close in. I book J about 4 - 3 months out and then upgrade to F last minute. Our JNB-HKG segment had 3+ J seats, I booked 2 in late november for mid February. J seats remained available right up to the day of departure. Upgraded 1 to F for HKG-BOS segment at T-11 days. Also booked YVR-HKG-DPS in J three months out, no option for F on the route.
