I share the same fear as OP (although I travel more at the front than at the back on long-haul), as this is what happened on medium-haul with the MiNi/Light fares (or whatever they are called by airlines). I have witnessed several times some "almost fights" between pax or pax being rude with cabin crews because there was no room for their large suitcase.
Let's not even mention the delays when the gate agents don't filter enough bags.
Personally, I would check a bag more often if, like for all my US domestic flights with Delta, the bags were constantly arriving before or within 5min at the belt.
