The comma variant means "either airport", as in this to mean a route that firstly goes to NYC or BOS, and then via CLT or DFW:
NYC,BOS CLT,DFW
Oh yes oops, thanks for spotting that. I actually entered it correctly (without the commas) into Matrix before posting to check the example gave results, but my Matrix auto-pilot must have switched off when I wrote it here!

Now corrected in my post.
