Why Do Rental Car Companies Put Identifying Marks on Cars in Light of Theft Danger?

I just rented from Enterprise in Amsterdam. There was a sticker on the dashboard with the name of the rental car company (with emergency phone numbers) and also on the outside of the hatchback door. I peeled off both.

Given that smash and grab thieves look for rental cars because of the higher likelihood of valuables in the car, why would a rental car company increase the risk to its customers (and its cars) by putting visible markings on the car?
