I think we should be careful about advocating for those seated in C+ or a premium cabin on upgrades to be "thrown out" to make room for someone who "paid." A confirmed seat and a confirmed upgrade are just that: confirmed. And it has been widely discussed on FT that "free" upgrades are absolutely not free, they are just paid for differently. Some people sitting in C+ seats on upgrades have had those reservations for months.
In my view, the right solution for this case is to upgrade
someone to D1 to open up more space in C+. If there is someone waitlisted for a GUC or mileage upgrade, I see no problem with DL upgrading that person so they are not just giving away a D1 seat, instead of OP.
