Gate is going to want to do a doc check (f you don't see an agent up front). Note that AM can (variably) not let you on with your carry-on if you don't have an AM hand baggage tag on it. SFO doesn't always enforce this but you can expect GDL will so you may want to get the bag tagged @ SFO.
