Our dog has no issues at all with flying in the cabin. He is small, under 10 pounds, and very happily hangs out in his carrier under the seat and chews on toys (or with the right seat mates, will come up and sit in our laps and delight everyone around us, because he's so cute). Boarding him would be far more stressful for him (and us!), not to mention expensive.
I don't want to start a collateral argument here, but there are a ton of assumptions you are making, about both your fellow passengers and what your dog experiences, that may very well be incorrect and be what you want to believe.
