In OP's case UA and SQ are both in Terminal 2 (although they'll have to go from T2B to 2A and back to 2B again) and with an 8pm arrival there won't be many connecting pax at that time so it's really not as bad as it sounds. Also I'd take a connection in LHR over one in PEK any day.
LHR T2 now has a Flight Connections center on the T2B concourse for pax connecting T2B-T2B. It’s at the bottom of the escalator just before you turn right for the underground walkway.
It’s purposely designed for this type of connection, and will save a good 20 minutes in walking to A and back, assuming it’s open at that time.
