I'd rather someone walk over to their companion than yell across the aisle as I had one couple do on a recent 777 flight. Walking over to a companion for a quick, quiet exchange is no different from someone walking by to get to the lav in the middle of the night. IMO it's more important to just be generally respectful no matter what you're doing.

Also, I actually think the last two middle seats on a 777 are the best for a couple - yes, you have to turn your head, but there's a cutout in the divider wall and it's perfectly fine unless you are trying to have a deep, extended discussion about the meaning of life. For a quick "hey can you pass me the Kindle" - no problem at all.
