Even with higher holiday prices it's still cheaper than renting a car, paying for fuel and parking at my destination. I'm doing this for the fun of driving on an autobahn. No, I will probably not rent a Mercedes, but would be fine with an Opel, Passat or anything in that size class.
Oh, the autobahn was no fun at all, I hope you have a better experience. I literally couldn't figure out where there was no speed limit (there are speed limits near cities) and traffic and just nope. I've gotten stuck renting a car twice in europe and I regret it both times. (Meanwhile I have 300+ days/year over here in rentals, much less worse experience.)
I'd take the train if I were you, I wish it wasn't unavailable the day we needed it! Otherwise, book 2 unpaid backup reservations so you can walk over to the next one and still get a good deal if you have to bail on the first etc, that's a good plan.
