Yes, that's correct - both for the flight where I can see the seat assignments in the AF record and ExpertFlyer, and for the flight where I can't. I observed the "Unassigned" designation in the same place prior to requesting seat assignments the first time. Thanks as well for your suggestion of Facebook/Twitter - I'll look into that.
